Defiance, OH — The City of Defiance is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Chief of Police, Frank Herbert, effective June 11, 2025. Chief Herbert succeeds Chief Todd Shafer, who retired several months ago.
Chief Herbert brings years of law enforcement experience to the role, most recently serving as a School Resource Officer for Defiance City Schools and a K9 handler. With a career marked by dedication to public safety, leadership, and community engagement, Chief Herbert is well-positioned to lead the Defiance Police Department into its next chapter.
“We are excited to have Chief Herbert leading the Police Department for our community,” said City Administrator Ryan Mack. “We had several great candidates for the Chief of Police position, and it wasn’t an easy decision. I thank all the candidates for their desire and passion toward our City."
"Chief Frank Herbert has demonstrated his commitment to the youth of our community through his work as a School Resource Officer at Defiance City Schools and as a founding member of our Police Young Cadet program. He knows and loves this community, and I believe he is going to be a great Chief of Police for the City of Defiance, Ohio."
Chief Herbert has served the City of Defiance for the last thirteen years, but has an extensive list of accomplishments and training, including service as an Army Military Police Officer (active and reserve) and the Ohio Air National Guard, as well as experience as a civilian police officer. He lives in Defiance with his wife, Elizabeth, and their four children: Brayden, Liam, Vivienne, and Sam, along with his K9 partner, Mojo. His son Brayden recently left for Marine Corps recruit training.
“I am honored to serve as the next Chief of Police for the City of Defiance, Ohio,” said Chief Frank Herbert. I look forward to working with the department, city leaders, and our residents to enhance public safety, build trust, and ensure a strong and vibrant community for all.”
A public swearing-in ceremony will be scheduled as soon as possible, and community members are encouraged to attend.
