“I am faking my engagement today.”

Harper Grace revealed she faked her engagement about a month after posting the “big news” with photos of the ring. The McKinney, Texas-born country artist, 24, told the full story of the staged proposal in a series of videos shared to TikTok and Instagram throughout the week. Grace explained that she “did it to tell something much deeper.”

“Oh my gosh. Not sure how it’s gonna go,” Grace said in the first clip, which she recorded on the day she posted the engagement photos. “But I have a song that’s coming out February 27 called ‘if daddy says no.’ And in order to stir the pot a little bit, I am faking an engagement. I’m posting today… Gonna see what the response is like. It’s gonna be a subtle hard launch for the next three or four days. And I’m not going to practically say that I’m not engaged. I actually told my stylist to send me the ring to my house as well, so that I can have it for the next week. People will still continuously think that I’m engaged. This is either the worst idea ever or the best idea. I haven’t decided yet. But my stomach is in a thousand knots. I’m so nervous. This either could be like really cool promo, or the worst thing I’ve ever come up with in my life. But I’m so stressed out. …Here we go. Let’s fake an engagement.”

The next day, the singer-songwriter said she was “actually having a mental breakdown,” in the clip that shared “more behind the ‘why.’” Grace said even many of her relatives didn’t know about her plans to fake an engagement, and wondered why she hadn’t called.

“Today is officially day one of me really being fake engaged. Woke up to 300 comments on my Instagram. A buttload of family members wondering why I didn’t call them (to) tell them I was engaged, and asked who the man is,” Grace said as she prepared herself a cup of coffee. “I’m like, ‘you guys, to think that I would actually be like that is crazy.’ I’m like, ‘y’all know me well enough.’ Maybe I should’ve given some sort of heads up, but I didn’t. This is the craziest situation of my entire life. People are asking him if I’m actually engaged. He’s saying ‘yes.’ Everyone throughout the team is curious what’s going on. I have my reps from my team basically saying that I want to keep it all private and I’m sharing as we go. I hate lying. I’m telling you, my internal self is freaking the freak out, 1,000%. All night long. I didn’t even go to bed until 2 a.m. last night because I was so stressed out. I’m scared to go in public and see somebody that I know and I have to say I’m engaged. People are going to say ‘congratulations’ to my face. I have to say ‘thank you.’ …Everything’s fine. I’m fine. My team thinks it’s great promo. Lord have mercy. Lord Jesus, forgive me for this lie. Help everybody know it’s a joke when it’s time to tell them it’s a joke.”

Grace continued sharing behind-the-scenes looks at the staged engagement, including reactions from friends who correctly guessed the country star was teasing an unreleased song. But Grace confirmed on Thursday (February 19) that she’s not done revealing new details.

“Thank you for following the breadcrumbs, for leaning in, for caring enough to wonder,” she wrote in a caption on Instagram. “There are still pieces of the behind-the-scenes story I can’t wait to share… So stay with me. But on February 27, This very tender page from my heart officially becomes yours. I can’t wait to hear how it speaks to you and what story it meets in your life.”
